What size solar panel do I need for a campervan?
For most UK campervans, a 100w to 150w kit is the sensible range. A 100w kit comfortably maintains a single leisure battery for weekend trips, while 120w–150w gives extra headroom for longer tours, winter use, or running a 12v fridge. The right size depends on your roof space and how much power you use, and our team is happy to help you work it out.
Are semi-flexible or rigid panels better for a campervan?
For campervans, semi-flexible panels are usually the better fit. They're lightweight, sit almost flush to the roof and can follow a gentle curve, which suits van roofs and keeps the profile discreet. Rigid panels are more robust and slightly more efficient, but they're heavier, stand proud of the roof and need a mounting frame, so they're more common on larger motorhomes.
Can I fit solar panels to a VW campervan or a pop-top roof?
Yes. Our semi-flexible kits are popular on VW T4, T5 and T6 vans and work well with pop-top roofs, where they bond to the fixed section of the roof around the lifting panel. If your roof profile is awkward, send us your measurements and a photo and we'll advise on the best layout.
Will campervan solar panels charge my battery while I'm driving?
A roof-mounted panel generates power whenever there's daylight, including while you drive, topping up your leisure battery on the move and while you're parked up. If you also want to charge from the engine while driving, that's done with a split charge or battery-to-battery kit, which we can supply alongside your solar kit.
Do I need an MPPT charge controller?
An MPPT controller isn't essential, but it's worth it for a campervan. MPPT controllers are more efficient than basic PWM controllers, drawing more usable charge from the same panel, especially in the weaker light of British winters. Many of our campervan kits are available with an MPPT controller as standard.
